Usually, advanced undergraduate students and graduate students are willing to serve as tutors to students needing help. Advisors can assist in making arrangements. Financial arrangements should be agreed upon prior to any tutoring sessions. Class instructors, academic departments, the Academic Assistance Center (Holton Hall, 785-532-6492) and the Tutoring Center (201 Leasure Hall, 785-532-5703) may be helpful in locating qualified tutors. Help sessions are a part of many of the basic classes. Check the course syllabus for times and locations. Attendance is voluntary but is often beneficial as part of test preparation.
What is the Tutoring Center?
The Tutoring Center is a student-funded facility sponsored by the Academic Assistance Center. It is located in 201 Leasure Hall. There are 18 tutoring cubicles that seat up to 5 students and one tutor. The Tutoring Center can have 40 or more tutors on staff who tutor more than 100 different subjects. The tutoring center is managed by students in a relaxed atmosphere, allowing anyone to feel comfortable about coming for tutoring.
Who are the tutors?
The tutors are primarily undergraduate students and some graduate students. They have applied to be tutors because they recognize that they can use their understanding of certain subjects to help other students. The tutors possess the important qualities of patience, being able to get along with others, and ability to communicate clearly. They also have at least a 3.0 GPA and received an A or a B in the class, or related class they wish to tutor.
How much does it cost?
Nothing! Okay, that’s not entirely true. Part of your tuition goes to various organizations and facilities. The Tutoring Center is one of them. So essentially by enrolling at K-State, you are paying for the tutoring. Getting a tutor won’t cost you any additional fees.
Who can get tutoring?
Any K-State student can get tutoring from the Tutoring Center. The only condition is that we have a tutor that tutors the subject you are requesting. The Tutoring Center is unable to offer tutoring in every subject, but we do offer quite a few.
How do I get a tutor?
Anyone interested in getting a tutor to help them out with their subject(s) should come into 101 Holton Hall. You will be asked to fill out a simple application and a time schedule. The application process usually takes a few days, depending upon the number of applications that need to be evaluated. The tutoring itself takes place during school hours and each session is assigned a regular time during the week. Thus, having a tutoring session is like having another class.
What are the tutoring sessions like?
Each session is 50 minutes long (the same as the average class period.) The number of students per session range from one to five depending upon the demand for that subject. How a session operates depends on the oral agreement between the student and the tutor.
