Jason Bergtold: 2024 David Mugler Outstanding Teacher Award Winner
Jason Bergtold’s passion for teaching and dedication to student success has earned him the 2024 David Mugler Outstanding Teaching Award. His journey to this recognition highlights his innovative approach and lasting impact on agricultural economics education.
Early Path to Teaching
Bergtold’s educational journey started at Colorado State University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in economics. After completing his master’s degree in agricultural and applied engineering and his doctorate in economics at Virginia Tech University, Bergtold worked with the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service before finding his true calling in teaching. In 2008, he joined K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, where he continues to make a lasting impact.
Innovating the Classroom Experience
Bergtold’s passion for teaching shines through in his favorite course, Intro to Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness. “I love engaging students in the classroom and watching them get excited about learning,” he said.
He’s transformed this course into a hands-on experience with lab sessions in which students simulate actual activities based on the real world. “The students collect real data, analyze it and apply what they’ve learned to real-world scenarios,” Bergtold said.
He hopes his students leave the class not only with technical knowledge but also with a greater passion for economics. “I want them to appreciate the different aspects of economics and human behavior and to use what they’ve learned to make better decisions in their careers and lives,” Bergtold said.
Inspiration to Teach
Bergtold’s journey to becoming a professor began with his desire to teach. Initially, he considered teaching at the high school level, but a professor inspired him to pursue graduate school. “I fell in love with research, the art of building models and solving problems,” he shared. “Teaching is about how we represent the world and answer questions.”
Reflecting on his David Mugler Outstanding Teaching Award nomination, Bergtold expressed gratitude. “It’s meaningful that my peers recognize the effort I’ve put into my teaching and its impact on my students,” he said.
Bergtold takes pride in his students' growth and believes that a degree in agricultural economics is valuable, even for those not planning to pursue a career directly in economics. “It teaches you about markets, sales and critical thinking,” he explained. “It helps you succeed in any career.”
Building Futures at K-State
At K-State, Bergtold appreciates the college’s supportive and friendly atmosphere. “K-State exudes family,” he said. “It’s been one of the most supportive environments I’ve been in.”
Through his innovative teaching methods and deep commitment to student success, Jason Bergtold continues to shape the future of agricultural economics and inspire students at Kansas State University.
