Major: Ph.D. Entomology, 2023

What has your education journey looked like?

I am originally from Ecuador and began my academic journey at Zamorano, an agricultural university in Honduras, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering. Afterward, I pursued a master’s degree in field crops and entomology at Purdue University, followed by a Ph.D. in entomology at Kansas State University, which I completed in 2023. After spending a year as a postdoctoral researcher at K-State, I joined Louisiana State University, where I currently serve as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Precision Pest Management.

What was your Ph.D. research about?

During my time at Kansas State University, my research centered on precision pest management, with an emphasis on automating insect counting through machine learning. I was particularly interested in the project because of its connection to robotics, which aligned with my broader interest in integrating technology into agriculture—one of the main factors that led me to K-State. In my current role, I focus on precision agriculture, applying machine learning to develop strategies for detecting insects, weeds, and diseases, while leveraging robotics to implement site-specific management solutions. My Ph.D. training was instrumental in providing the foundation to apply these advanced technologies effectively.

What was one of your favorite things about the College of Agriculture?

At K-State, collaboration is highly encouraged, with opportunities for different departments to contribute to research projects. My Ph.D. work, for example, involved entomology, computer science, and biological and agricultural engineering, creating an integrated approach. I believe this type of collaboration is unique in that it allows researchers to share expertise and develop truly multidisciplinary projects.

Do you have advice for students pursuing higher education?
