K-State College of Ag is proud to recognize alumni from all departments who continue to pursue their passion in their respective fields. It is through experience that we continue to grow as individuals and stewards of the industry. Through those experiences, we hope to be a continued resource for the next generation of K-State students to lean on for advice and continue to build our network!
How has your education helped you throughout your career?
I graduated from K-State in 1970 with a bachelor's in Animal Sciences and Industry, business option. I started at K-State with a background in cattle production, but I needed to gain knowledge about the business aspect of the industry. My advisor, Dr. Calvin Drake, suggested I take business classes to fill this gap.
Dr. Drake recognized my ambition to run my own business and explained the importance of having academic knowledge to succeed. He encouraged me to expand my knowledge through business and economics classes and to join judging teams.
Our operation includes irrigated farming, cow/calf and feedlot operations. As a business owner, I credit much of my success to his advice. The business courses I took at K-State were very beneficial to my career. I learned there is more to running a cattle operation than knowing cattle, and I gained a better understanding of the industry and market.
Much of my time at K-State was spent on various judging teams, including meat, wool, and livestock judging. Being a member of these multiple teams greatly enhanced my educational experience. I learned to communicate effectively with other individuals and how to view the industry from a consumer perspective.
I graduated from K-State with immense knowledge of the beef industry and how to effectively run a business. My time at K-State set me up for success after college, and I still draw from that knowledge today.
Why would you encourage others who are interested in working in the beef industry to choose the College of Agriculture at K-State?
I learned important life lessons and business skills essential to the beef industry. A big part of the education process is the development of communication and problem-solving skills.
My time at K-State helped me gain people skills and relationships that are crucial to success in the future. Students have an excellent opportunity to interact with other students, faculty, staff, and industry professionals while at K-State. There are many opportunities that encourage students to build relationships, grow their network, and enhance their communication skills.
The connections I made at K-State have undoubtedly helped me grow as a cattle producer. I encourage students to take full advantage of the opportunities and connections within the Animal Sciences and Industry department.
One of the most valuable connections I made at K-State was with my advisor. He gave me academic advice and encouraged me to join the meat judging team. This experience taught me a lot about retail beef, including the importance of keeping the finished product in mind during the production phase, meat preparation, and understanding consumer preferences. The experience was incredibly valuable and was only possible because of that connection.
What do you think sets K-State College of Ag apart from other schools?
I have a lot of positive thoughts about K-State, specifically the agriculture college. The faculty, staff, and students are genuine and make the overall experience successful. I still remember the welcoming, family-like atmosphere, and I’m glad it has stretched to the rest of campus.
There is a lot to be gained at K-State beyond the classroom. The College of Agriculture prepares students for success with hands-on learning and real-world experience. Students are also very blessed to have the North campus that houses livestock and crops for real-world applications.
You can find anything on the internet, but nothing compares to hands-on learning. K-State offers unique classes where you can focus on specific species and skills. If you have not gained any prior livestock experience, K-State will get you where you need to be. Only a few schools have on-site farms dedicated to student learning.
It’s always encouraging to see how invested K-State is in student success. The academic advising, family atmosphere, and opportunities develop students into contributing citizens.
I admire the variety of opportunities students have to engage with the industry through classes, clubs, and competition teams. My time spent on the various judging teams was enjoyable and was filled with teaching moments. I learned how to apply my degree beyond the classroom.
I am pleased to see students from all around the country attending K-State. Even if you are not from Kansas, K-State has a lot to offer and will welcome you home.
