K-State College of Ag is proud to recognize alumni from all departments who continue to pursue their passion in their respective fields. It is through experience that we continue to grow as individuals and stewards of the industry. Through those experiences, we hope to be a continued resource for the next generation of K-State students to lean on for advice and continue to build our network!

What is your current title/organization?

I am a shareholder with Campbell Litigation, my law firm. We defend companies in labor and employment matters. Our office is located in Denver, Colorado, but we work for clients in the Rocky Mountains and into the Western region of the United States.

What did you major in, and how did it prepare you for your career?

I was an agricultural journalism (now agricultural and natural resources communications) major and I thought I would continue writing things for the College of Agriculture. I loved the major, although there were not a lot of people in it at the time I graduated. We learned in our major classes how to capture information in a lead paragraph and to use that information throughout the story.

I realized what I learned through my journalism days at K-State was extremely helpful when I was going through law school in drafting pleadings and storytelling to the court. Learning communication skills has been extremely beneficial for me and my practice. I often tell people when they ask about my practice that we are trial lawyers, but before we ever get to trial, we are writing, researching and putting our information in front of the court. I learned at K-State the importance of journalistic style and being clear and concise in my writing. I use that skill in my legal writing daily.

Can you share more about your involvement in extracurricular activities during college?

I was involved as a state officer for FFA, which was a big responsibility during my first year of college. It required balancing getting acclimated to school and classes with going out to different high schools for speaking engagements at banquets. That experience taught me a lot about juggling and managing responsibilities.

I was also involved with the National Honor Society, where academics were extremely important to us, especially in Farmhouse. It was about balancing social activities with doing what was necessary academically. I also served as an officer for the Agriculture Student Council for a couple of years and helped with some campaigns for friends running for Student Body President. All of these experiences helped me develop the skills I use in my practice today, particularly in staying organized.

What advice would you give to your college self?

Work hard but enjoy the opportunities that K-State has to offer. I would step out beyond your college and major in order to grow. After college, I realized that in college, you are there to get an education in a specific major, but it's really about the breadth and depth you get. It’s important to be able to think on a higher level and interact with people who are different from us and have different backgrounds. When you start your career, you don't know who you're going to be working for or who you're going to be working with. K-State provides an opportunity to step out beyond who and what you are to be able to grow.

Any final advice for prospective students?

Give some real thought to where you're going to spend your next four years. Look at campuses, talk to professors and students and compare your options. I would feel comfortable having my kids go to K-State. There's a personality there that is very humble and challenging, providing an opportunity to grow beyond who you are. That's what college is all about.
